2016 Boat Rally

Despite the inclement weather on the Saturday the weekend boat rally (August 20th & 21st) was an enjoyable and successful event.
rally art sideThe boat traders and stall holders all had a good time and did well except for Aqueduct Marina whose gazebo went for an unscheduled flying lesson on Saturday evening, never to return. Another stall holder had one gazebo damaged beyond repair but it didn’t prevent successful trading on Sunday.
N.B. Dreamsong No. 2 owned by Dave and Helen Newall won the Best Decorated Boat Competition. The theme this year was pirates and Dave just pipped two other worthy contenders with the hook on his hand, parrot on his shoulder, bandana and eye patch.  Many more boats than usual entered into the spirit of the occasion which made the judging a more lengthy affair than usual.  We thank Cllr Ann Hartley, Chair of Shropshire Council;  Cllr Mike McDonald of Whitchurch Town Council; Wendy Capelle, Manager of North Wales and Borders Canal & River Trust; Brenda Harvey, Chair of North Wales & Borders Waterway Partnership;  Cllr Tom Biggins of Shropshire Council for their support in judging the boats.  We also thank our ex-Chairman, Mr Peter Wagstaffe for ushering our judges so ably. He can talk the right talk!
The fun dog show on Sunday got off to a rollicking start with a new venture for us – an agility class.  Not one of us had done this before so it was definitely learning on the job.  Our helpers were marvellous and it all went really well with great gales of laughter from participants and watchers alike.  We thank Steve Leonard from Leonard Brothers Veterinary Practice for doing the judging for us.  He was unfortunately detained by an emergency at the practice so he missed all the fun of the agility class.
Several stall holders and boat traders have asked to come next year which is always a sign that people have enjoyed themselves.
None of this could have taken place without the magnificent support of the local businesses who donated raffle prizes and items for the boater’s goody bags or the family and friends of members who turn up to help on the day.
